Podiatry/Chiropody Conditions
What are cracked heels
Cracked heels can occur when the skin on the heel becomes excessively dry, thick, and splits under pressure. Cracks can range from surface level to deep and painful, occasionally leading to bleeding or infection.
What are the causes:
- Dry skin or lack of moisture
- Prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces
- Open shoes or sandals that allow the skin to expand sideways
- Medical conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or diabetes
- Excessive build-up of hard skin

What treatments can help
Podiatry
Your podiatrist will carefully reduce the thickened skin and smooth the heels using specialist podiatry tools. If necessary, they will also apply a moisturiser, and make suggestions on home care for moisturising routines and footwear changes to prevent cracks from recurring. In more severe cases, your podiatrist will provide dressings to protect the area while it heals.
How you will feel after treatment
You will experience immediate relief from pressure and pain, with smoother skin and greater comfort in your shoes. Walking will feel easier and lighter (sometimes like you are walking on air), especially in areas that were previously causing pain.
