MSK Conditions
What is a Trapped Nerve
A trapped nerve can occur when pressure is placed on a nerve by surrounding tissues, such as muscles, bones, or discs. This can cause a sharp pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness along the nerveβs pathway. Trapped nerves typically occur in the neck, back, and wrists, but they can occur anywhere in the body.
What are the causes:
- Herniated discs in the spine
- Muscle tightness or spasm compressing nerves
- Poor posture or repetitive strain
- Arthritis causing narrowing around nerves
- Injuries
- Swelling and inflammation

What treatments can help
Osteopathy
Your osteopath will use a variety of gentle and effective techniques, including massage, targeted stretching, and mobilisation on the affected body part and surrounding joints. They will focus on relieving pressure on the affected nerve and improving posture.
Acupuncture
Your acupuncturist will use very fine needles placed in carefully selected points on your body. Many people feel a mild tingling or warmth during treatment, followed by a sense of calm and relaxation. They will combat pain and inflammation by relaxing the nervous system to calm nerve irritation and improve circulation.
Physiotherapy
Your physiotherapist will use a combination of gentle manual therapy, stretching, and guided exercises to release the nerve from feeling tension and restore mobility in the affected area. Heat, massage, and posture correction may also be used to ease discomfort and prevent recurrence.
How you will feel after treatment
You are likely to feel reduced pain and tingling as well as improved mobility. With regular treatment, nerve irritation will ease, and your confidence in daily activities will return.
