Podiatry/Chiropody Conditions
What is a Fungal Nail Infection
Fungal nail infections are common issues that cause the nails to become thickened, discoloured, brittle, and occasionally painful. They can affect one or multiple nails and may worsen if left untreated.
What are the causes:
- Fungal spores picked up in communal areas (e.g. gyms, swimming pools)
- Warm, moist environments that encourage fungal growth
- Weakened immune system or underlying health conditions
- Previous nail damage or untreated athleteβs foot
- Trauma to the nail caused by impact in sports, poor fitting or tight footwear
