MSK Conditions
What is Sciatica
Sciatica is pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve. This runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. Sciatica often occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes compressed or inflamed. It can vary from mild discomfort to sharp, shooting pain, often accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg. If left untreated, it can severely impact mobility, sleep, and ability to carry out daily activities.
What are the causes:
- Herniated or slipped discs pressing on the nerve
- Narrowing of the spinal canal (Spinal stenosis)
- Muscle tightness trapping the nerve (Piriformis syndrome)
- Poor posture or prolonged sitting
- Changes to the pelvis after pregnancy

What treatments can help
Osteopathy
Your osteopath will use a variety of gentle and effective techniques, including massage, targeted stretching, and mobilisation on the spine and surrounding joints. They will focus on relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve and improving posture.
Acupuncture
Your acupuncturist will use very fine needles placed in carefully selected points on your body. Many people feel a mild tingling or warmth during treatment, followed by a sense of calm and relaxation. They will combat pain and inflammation by relaxing the nervous system to calm the irritation and improve circulation.
How you will feel after treatment
You are likely to feel much needed pain relief in the buttocks and leg, less nerve irritation, and renewed comfort in sitting, standing, or walking. With ongoing care and regular treatments, the frequency of flare-ups reduces, and confidence in movement returns.
