What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practice that involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. This practice is believed to stimulate the flow of qi (pronounced “chi”), to restore balance within the body, promote healing, and relieve pain.
According to TCM, the body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points that are connected by pathways or “meridians.” When these pathways are blocked, it can cause pain, illness, or other health problems. Acupuncture aims to unblock the meridians to allow the body to heal.
Treatments are tailored to your specific needs, with consideration of your symptoms, lifestyle and overall health.

What to expect from Acupuncture
During your sessions, your acupuncturist will use very fine needles placed at carefully selected points on your body. Many people feel a mild tingling or warmth during treatment, followed by a sense of calm and relaxation. Sessions are always adapted to your comfort and needs.
The goals of acupuncture are to:
- Relieve pain and tension
- Improve energy flow and circulation
- Reduce stress and promote relaxation
- Restore the body’s natural healing processes
- Enhance overall wellbeing
Although some people feel benefits immediately, typically best results are observed over a series of treatments.

How your appointment will look
You will be welcomed into the consultation room by your Acupuncturist, who will take a detailed history of your symptoms, lifestyle, and medical background. They are likely to examine your tongue, pulse, or posture depending on your symptoms and they will discuss your treatment goals.
You will then be asked to lie comfortably on a treatment couch while acupuncture needles are gently inserted into specific points. It is advised to wear comfortable clothing, and you may be asked to remove items of clothing depending on where the needles need to be inserted. The needles are typically left in place for 20–30 minutes while you relax. You will also be provided with an alarm to notify the Acupuncturist if you need anything when the needles are in place.
Your acupuncturist may also use gentle manual techniques, heat therapy, or complement the acupuncture with some cupping therapy when deemed appropriate.
Your session will conclude with your Acupuncturist removing the needles, and you will have some time to adjust and feedback anything. They will offer recommendations on self care actions and follow‑up appointments, to support your health goals.
